SCRIPTWRITING MASTERCLASS with Jamal Joseph (Director of Chapter & Verse’)

Paulette Harris-German introduces Jamal Joseph – an American writer, director, producer, poet, activist, and educator. Joseph was a member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. He was prosecuted as one of the Panther 21.

Joseph served 5½ years in Leavenworth, where he earned two college degrees and wrote his first play. To date, he has written five plays and two volumes of poetry. He earned his BA summa cum laude from the University of Kansas while at Leavenworth.  He was instrumental in arranging for historic graduation ceremonies at the Apollo Theatre.  He is a full professor and former chair of Columbia University’s Graduate Film Division and the artistic director of the New Heritage Theatre Group in Harlem. He has been featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, BET’s American Gangster and on Tupac Shakur’s The Rose That Grew from Concrete Volumes 1 and 2. He is the author of the interactive biography on Tupac Shakur, Tupac Shakur Legacy.

His memoir Panther Baby was published in February 2012 by Algonquin Books. Jamal is the director of ‘Chapter and Verse‘ which will have its’ London premiere at BT Tower on Friday 8 September.


ACTING MASTERCLASS with BUFF 2017 Honorary Award Recipient Ashley Walters

Dr Clare Anyiam-Osigwe BEM introduces one of the UK’s most respected and celebrated actors to deliver the BUFF acting masterclass. The format will be:

Q+A With Ashley to reflect on 25 years on screen. Duologues – attendees should BRING a 60 second duologue to work on with a partner in the class. Performance of the duologues with notes from Ashley. Finishing the session with a group improvisation performed piece.

Walters appeared on television as Omar in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles at the age of 10, and as Andy in Grange Hill at the age of 14. His list of film credits includes Montana (which received a BUFF world festival premiere in 2014) Bullet Boy, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Demons Never Die, Life and Lyrics, Sugarhouse, Goal, Fedz & Anuvahood.

Dr Clare Anyiam-Osigwe BEM hosts a conference with the UK’s top Casting, Writing, and Talent Agents for budding and active actors, writers, directors and commercial models to meet face to face and connect. Q&A followed by 2hrs of speed networking. This one-off opportunity to have 4 agents in 1 room should not be missed. You’re advised to bring your portfolio, showreel and head shots.

Actress and Writer, Kim has acted in television serials Family PrideSpecials and Firm Friends when the filmmaker Gurinder Chadha took her inBhaji on the Beach to play the role of Ginder, a girl of Punjabi origin in England. The film brought her much recognition. She has worked mainly in television production. Among other roles, she is known for playing Rosie Sattar in the television series Holby City from 2003 to 2005 and besides Doctor Bannerjee in Coronation Street, Yvonne in Always and Everyone. She has also been in CasualtyEastEndersCrackerLove HurtsDangerfield and North Square. She has also worked on the Silver Street radio programme on the BBC Asian Network.
Sandra is the Managing Director & Agent at The Avenue Literary & Talent Management, which she founded in February 2015. She represents both writers and actors. The agency is the  sister company to Writers Avenue Theatre Company, which Sandra has produced over 20 new writing events for, with writers currently under commission for full productions.
Sandra woks in the style of a personal manager, nurturing writers at the early stages of their career, helping them understand the industry, build solid relationships with established production companies and build up their CV. She also represents talented actors, many who can be seen working in the West End (Donmar Theatre, Old Vic, National Theatre),  television (BBC, ITV, Channel 4) and film (Warner Brothers, Scott Free Productions).
Working from her offices in London, Shakyra casts international films and television. She was recently honoured with two nominations in the UK CDA Casting Awards 2017 in both the Feature Film and Short Film categories. Shakyra entered the entertainment industry over two decades ago as an actress. She went on to found her own successful theatre production company, working with new writers. Shakyra then worked for a well known West End theatre producer, assisting on casting several shows; she naturally branched out as an independent Casting Director.
