Life defining moments and issues are the focus in this selection with the audience voting for their favourite film on the night, to be put forward as 1 of the 4 official nominations for the BUFF Awards ceremony on Saturday 7 September.

The Evolution of Us (Dir: Arman Babaali)
An artistic piece displaying the natural growth changes in a modern day relationship and the external elements which may manifest within it.
Brexicuted (Dir: Chris Shepherd)
This satirical animation considers why Brexit is happening. A variety of British characters, interviewed the day after the UK voted to leave the EU, speak about what motivated their decision.
Eli (Dir: Colin Gerrard)
A terrorist attack raises uncomfortable questions about immigration, identity and morality. When a group of disillusioned strangers encounter Eli, an elderly man, can the harrowing events torn from his past influence their future?
Dorreh (Dir: Sogol Afshar)
The school bullies drive Dorreh to cut off her unibrow. The stitches on her face restores her relationship with her mother.
Blackout (Dir: Serena Chloe Gardner)
Grace lives on a council estate with her mentally ill mother Cathy. Unable to manage her mother’s illness any longer, Grace takes matters into her own hands and begins to reassess whether the decision she makes really was the best way to help her mum.
Regrets (Dir: AJ Sykes)
Mary sees her husband Jim in a hospital bed breathing with an oxygen mask. Through several flashbacks we see Mary’s life full of turmoil, from enduring years of physical and mental abuse from her childhood to adulthood. Jim removes his oxygen mask and the room begins to radiate with white light and he sees Mary in her red dress from all those years ago. Suddenly the illusion is shattered as Mary leaves.
Journey (Dir: Rachel Kaden)
A father questions his faith after his son is murdered. An opportunity arises that could help mend his broken soul.
Hatima (Co-dir’s: Funke Alafiatayo & Damilola Babalola)
Upon discovering a suspicious bag at work, Hatima is faced with a choice that could change her current situation. Will her duties of care for her family back home in Tanzania, coupled with her financial and educational strains force her to make a decision that challenges her integrity?
Kindred (Dir: Janet Marrett)
A woman of Nigerian heritage is estranged from her family but must attempt to mend the rift when her daughter is in desperate need of a matching bone marrow donor.
Their They’re There (Dir: Olly Blower)
Live action and animation collide in this playful yet painfully honest short film about the familiar frustrations of exams.
